For such a small study, scientists took samples from the eyes of 20 participants, nine wear contact lenses and 11 non-users to examine the types of bacteria. "There is an increased prevalence of corneal ulcers since the introduction of contact lenses in the 1970s," said researcher Jack Dodick, MD and professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone. "Because the organism seems to emerge from the skin, hygiene needs more attention of the eyelids and hands," he added.
